About the Author
John W. Mullins John Mullins is Associate Professor of Management Practice at London Business School, where he heads the entrepreneurship group. He earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and, considerably later in life, his PhD in marketing from the University of Minnesota. An award-winning teacher, John brings to his teaching and research 20 years of executive experience in high-growth firms, including two ventures he founded, one of which he took public. Since becoming a business school professor in 1992, John has published more than 30 articles in a variety of outlets, including Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, and the Journal of Business Venturing. His research has won national and international awards from the Marketing Science Institute, the American Marketing Association, and the Richard D. Irwin Foundation. He is also co-author of Marketing Management: A Strategic Decision-Making Approach, 5th edition. His recent trade book, The New Business Road Test: What Entrepreneurs and Executives Should Do Before Writing a Business Plan, is the definitive work on the assessment and shaping of market opportunities.

Orville C. Walker, Jr. Orville C. Walker, Jr. is Professor Emeritus in the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where he served until recently as the James D. Watkins Professor of Marketing and Director of the PhD Program. He holds a Master’s degree in social psychology from the Ohio State University and a PhD in marketing from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Orville is the co-author of three books and has published more than 50 research articles in scholarly and business journals. Contemporary Latin America presents the epochal changes in the cultures, governments, economies and societies of Latin America at a critical moment in the region’s history. Beginning in 1970, a decade before the tumultuous changes of the 1980s, Holden and Villars analyze the decline of the old era in order to fully highlight the significance of later developments.

The authors identify the central tendency of these changes as liberalization or openness, and present them in the context of the Latin American nations’ rich history both as overseas kingdoms of the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies, and as self-emancipated republics. They emphasize the global, national and local dimensions of the region’s recent past, while highlighting the persistence of deep-seated historical legacies that have continued to shape contemporary Latin America.

In this compelling sociological narrative, Rios describes the problems facing black and Latino youth as they come of age. A former gang member who went on to earn a Ph.D. at Berkeley, Rios returned to his old Oakland neighborhood to shadow 40 young men as they dealt with poverty, violence, and institutionalized racism. As he recounts their life stories, Rios deftly balances analysis with vivid anecdotes about uninterested educators, struggling parents, police brutality, and gang victimization. From elementary school on, teachers and law enforcement mark these boys as "dangerous" or "difficult," and harshly punish them for petty infractions. Once they accumulate "negative credentials," the young men are subject to increased surveillance—and are consequently more likely to end up in prison. Rios terms this criminalization "the youth control complex," and explains how it systematically deprives boys of their dignity and their ability to succeed at school or in the job market. He examines how the culture of punishment pushes young men into the very criminality that the punishment is meant to deter, and makes a compelling argument that better financed social programs and positive reinforcement could make all the difference. Such an amazing book. Victor Rios brings to light the challenges that marginalized youth face in urban areas. Challenges.. that crush these kids sense of self worth and any hope of achieving a life outside of crime. His research follows the lives of 40 boys in the gang infested areas of Oakland, California. He exposes a debilitating punitive system that places unjust discriminating stigmas on these boys at a very young age. In most cases.. prior to them ever having any involvement with crime. In fact several had never actually committed crimes but were treated as if they had.. simply by association due to circumstances beyond their control or because of how they looked. Behaviors commonly seen as that of a normal adolescent are instead interpreted as criminal behavior resulting in harsh punishments and berating by authority figures involved in the daily lives of these kids. I can't help but picture in my mind a scene of a dog being beaten by it's owner who out of desperation eventually attempts to bite back only to be faced with more brutality.Dr. Rios proposes an alternative system called the "Youth Support Complex". Unlike the criminal justice system called the "Youth Control Complex" currently in place that criminalizes marginalized youth and sets them on a path to a life of incarceration.. his program sets out to promote compassion and understanding for these youth to help improve the quality of their lives and support their reintegration back into society as productive citizens.It is a must read for all who are involved in the daily lives of our youth. Hopefully it will promote compassion and a deeper look into the individual child and his/her circumstances.

In Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys, by Victor Rios, the author conducts a field research examining the system of punitive social control that is developed in Oakland, California. In his research, he uses a method known as esthonography, the study of individuals through direct participation in there home-setting, but can also be described as shadowing, and observes 40 “at-risk” criminalized and marginalized youths in Oakland, California over the course of 3 years so that he can come to an understanding of the lives of Black and Latino boys. His goal is to “show the the failures of criminalization, the failures of using harshm stigmatizing, and humiliating forms of punishment to “correct” and “manage” marginalized youths, as well as to highlight the consequences that these methods have on young peoples trajectories.” (Rios 23). Throughout his research he uses the micro sociology approach. In this approach, he conducts many interviews and builds trust with the youths because without it the data he was collecting would not have been true or valid. The interviews helped Rios hear the youth’s side of the story and how they felt when they would receive the punishment or also known as the youth control complex; a term Rios created. The youth complex system is the conceptual framework for understanding the system of punishment that Rios came across when analyzing the everyday and institutional aspects of criminalization. Rios examines the significance that defiance and resistant have for inner-city boys. Resistant contradicts the idea that young Black and Latino men reject mainstream values and prefer to embrace the streets rather than try and improve. Many times, the authorities tried to help the youths but every time they did, the youths took it in a negative way and continued to do so in every situation encountered. For example, in the story of The Probation Officer, the officer would attempt to just say a simple hello but instead of saying hello back or an easy nice response, the youth would instead taunt and curse towards the officer. The youth would purposely make things worse by being defiant and by doing this only made the situation worse for the youth. Personally, I believe that his method and experiment he created was valid enough to say that in order to help someone you have to go to the core. You have to make an effort to understanding where they are coming from and what caused them to take action in what they did. It could all be because of living style, family, friends, area of living, etc. All these different factors can lead to the reason of negative choices. I also believe that Rios is valid when is comes to authority because since he was a former gang member and lived the same life style as the new generation of young men he could truly relate to them and get an understanding of where they are coming from and he can help them. Even though he didn't let his personal opinion or experience effect his judgment and assessment of his research, he never rationalized his data to one side so i believe that is why he is a valid source overall. To bring in conclusion, i believe that everyone can be helped if we took the time to truly understand and to listen. Often times criminalized youths are automatically judged and are never given the opportunity to speak out on their stories or since they get shut down they get the mindset of theres no hope so they give up. Often times, people involved in any type of crime end up getting help so that they can be better but the only way it can “work” to help the person is to understand the cause of their actions and from then on we can begin to develop solutions to help the person. The author and his research that he came up with goes to show that if people took the time to help and understand that we can help people around us by creating solutions.

I returned this one after reading 10%. The idea of reading a book my a man who grew up in Oakland gangs and became a PHD as an adult was_very_appealing. Rios masterfully explains how the youth in Oakland (and the US more broadly) are increasingly surrounded with police-like institutions which severely damage their opportunities for success. I would definitely recommend the book for anyone who wants to have a better understanding of youth and what we might be able to do to alleviate the problems they face.

Rios offers a valuable collection of stories of the Black and Latino/a youth in the Oakland area. Punished is the story of his graduate work, shadowing students who were at high risk, criminalized and paroled. I recently decided to go insane and start up a conlang for my homebrew Dungeons & Dragons world. This book was among those highly cited and recommended by many sources, so I bought it. The book is good, and offers a lot of insight and information about creating your own language, *however* the explanations and examples provided are often far too lofty and over my head, as I am but a beginner at deconstructing and analyzing language. You can definitely tell that Mr. Rosenfelder is a language expert, and has been studying languages for years, because that's exactly how he explains it, from a collegiate level of understanding. There is little-to-no "dumbing it down" for the average reader who is just starting out at conlanging. That aside, this is still a very useful resource if you were simply looking for a naming convention for your fantasy world.

I honestly thought I wouldn't get much out of this book, since I am definitely not a conlanging beginner. I just wanted to support the author since I LOVE their word generator and sound change applies.However there are so many small little details and information stuffed into this book. It's been teaching me new info and helping me really perfect the basics. I highly recommend this for any skill level.

Every example mentioned for building your language (firmly based upon actual linguistic concepts - and yes, I think this is a good companion book for an intro to linguistics class) is given with examples from either real-world languages or from some of the author's own conlangs.So why buy the book when you can get the kit for free?Well, first off, if you've ever visited the LCK online, you should support the guy who created it. How? By buying the book.Secondly - and somewhat more importantly - this isn't just a reprint of the online version. It's expanded (there's a whole new FASCINATING section on semantics, for example) and it's convenient to have on your desk.So why only four stars?No fault of the author's, but the formatting was a bit odd. Sometimes a section header would appear as the last line on a page, or a line would be spaced v e r y s t r a n g e l y, and that made it hard to read. The formatting issues are *not* his fault, but they *did* require me to re-read more often than I'd like because they made it hard to understand some things wherever they occurred.

I am a complete novice entering into the world of Conlanging and this was my first purchase, I read his website online and found it fascinating and informative and wanted to go more into depth. There are a lot of things covered her that I'd never even heard of before. You don't really think about all the things that go into the language that you speak, but someone, somewhere has analyzed it, saw its rules, patterns, and gave it a name and grouped it with others like it. And this book does a fantastic job of explaining those concepts (some very complicated) in a practical way that makes it easy to transfer this information into creating one's own language. Its a riveting read and I am so excited to put it into practice.

I ordered this book not because of a huge interest in RPGs or fantasy/sci-fi writing (which I admittedly don't have) but beacuse of my fascination with languages, real or constructed. I find this book to be pretty interesting and helpful. I must admit that I'm not a great linguist, and there are things in the book that I still don't quite follow, but I think it's one of the better books on language that I've seen.I really like how Rosenfelder describes the sounds that are used in languages, and the sound changes that languages can undergo (and have undergone). I find it fascinating that sound changes are actually REGULAR (in "real" languages, anyway)! Some of the sounds I still have no idea how humans are able to produce! (I also think it's cool that he provided the chart of IPA symbols!)Not only does this book show how language "works," but it can also aid you in creating your OWN language(s). I don't know if I'll ever invent a really good language, but I think Rosenfelder gives a lot of good ideas on language construction. Do you want your conlang to be really complex, with lots of elements from lots of other languages? Or do you want it to be relatively simple? However you want your conlang(s) to be, I think you'll find a lot of useful advice here.Rosenfelder also discusses the more, well, "mental" aspects of language, like how what someone SAYS isn't always what they MEAN, how NOT saying something can actually say it (like when you ask someone a question and they give you an "answer" that doesn't really fit your question but suggests to you, intentionally or unintentionally, what the REAL answer is), and how the WAY that you say something can affect another person's reaction.However, I'm not so fond of some of the example sentences that he uses. For a couple of examples, "The king is f***ing the girl? " "The girl who the king is f***ing likes my dog" Really, Mark? There are also other instances of "bad" language, but hopefully that and the fact that the book may not display much "diversity" in its example sentences won't bother you too much.Although the book does, in my opinion, have some shortcomings, I would recommend it to those who are into fantasy/sci-fi writing and RPGs or to those who are, like me, more interested in languages (real or invented) and who aren't too prudish or too much of sticklers for "political correctness." (And remember, people: Fantasy languages are just that --- fantasy languages. They should be fun --- they don't have to be treated as seriously as rocket science or brain surgery, or be intended for speakers of all "real" languages! I'm saying this because I think some people take conlanging TOO seriously!)
